Shimmering shapes in white gold, moon silver, and star shine white with tiny hints of sparkles and dazzling embellishments here and there are always in season.

Romantic white and cream gowns, innocent baby doll pleats and long flowing trains are evocative of the range of fairy fashion.

Barely there outfits in natural colors to match perky flowers, and the hues of the deep wood.

Fairy Fabrics

A hint of pretty lace, the soft whisper of silk, the richness of velvet, the earthy touch of objects from nature, and the sparkle of jewels can be found in the wardrobe of the well dressed fairy. Natural fabrics, are the key to keeping a fairy happily dressed. Cotton, Wool, Linen, Hemp, and Silk are the most well known and popular of these fabrics among fairy kind.

Silk comes in may weights from heavy silk velvets and brocades, to fabrics so sheer they will float in the slightest breeze. Brocaded, ruffled, flounced, embroidered, beaded, tasseled and jeweled, you can find silks of all kinds in modern lines of clothing. In today’s shops both online and off line, you will find many magical clothing choices in different types of silk.

The wonderful cotton plant also produces fine fairy fabrics. Look for dresses, skirts, and blouse in crinkled cotton gauze, or ultra light weight polished cotton, if you are into a bit of sheen. The three tiered skirt in breezy cottons is the favorite staple of many a fairy’s closet. Add a lovely little poet’s blouse or pirate’s shirt with a brocaded bodice or vest, and you have a enchanting outfit for day time fairy wear.

Wools are vastly popular with the fall and winter fae, and like other natural fabrics, comes in many different weaves and weights. Light weight wools are nice on a chilly fall night, while the thinker wools, are perfect for sleigh rides through delightful snow covered forest trails.
Linen is favorite fabric of most garden society fairies. Once again there are many weights and weaves providing a variety of textures, and drapes. From rich colors, to muted floral patterns, linen is versatile enough for most fairy wear. Heavy weight to medium weight linen is the fabric to choose if you are looking for a more tailored and fitted look to your fairy wear. Heavy linens are wonderful for spring and summer vest and bodices, holding their shape well while keeping a fairy cool and comfortable for an afternoon‘s tea by the lakeside.

Hemp is a very old fabric that is now rising again in popularity among the human population of this world, but the fairy nation has always taken advantage of its many uses for clothing. Hemp can be rough and nubby, and smooth and filmy sheer depending on its weave and weight. Hemp makes the idea for soles of foot wear for durability.

Fairy Style

Styles vary from fitted and semi tailored, romantically loose and flowing, to short, sweet, and skin barring. Don’t forget the ever popular tattered fairy look! Sweetness and light, to dark and gothic, fairies dress in the styles they feel the most comfortable in. Long formal gowns in gorgeous colors of shimmering velvet and heavy brocaded silks adorned with opulent trims and brilliant jewels are much in vogue with the court fairies. The woodland fairies prefer clothing made from the materials nature provides, such as cotton fabric, leaves, bits of twigs, flower petals, and soft mosses.

Capes and cloaks abound in rich velvets, and stiff embroidered silks. Sumptuous, and divine this bit of outer fairy wear might been deeply cowled, or have a full Kinsdale type of hood. Made in broad spectrum of fabrics, from sheers, to heavy weight plush velvet. Short, mid length or long with a sweeping back train, a good cape or cloak should be generously cut for a flowing graceful drape. Unlined cloaks are fine for late spring and summer wear, but a wise investment is in the fully lined version, for extra warmth in the chillier months when a heavier bit of outer wear is needed. Fully lined versions also have the benefit of being more durable.

Fairy Accessories

Accessories are also important to the fairy folk. Bits of bent twigs to shimmering jewels no queen’s crown has ever boosted are found atop the dressing tables of the fairies the world over. Elaborate head pieces of diamond’s and gold, to simple woven flower wreaths rest upon fashionable shiny tresses. Ribbons tied up and down an arm or leg and left to dangle are lovely when flowing behind a fairy in full flight.

Scarves, stoles, and wraps can be found in a variety of materials from spider web silks, to woven bead trimmed ponchos. Jewelry of precious stones, sits beside adornments made from bits of shells, feathers, and flowers.

Belts can be found in many different shapes, and styles. Beaded fantasies, beribboned wisps, and chunky adored metallic lengths adore waists.

Striped stockings, tattered stockings, and print stockings, paired with chunky Mary Janes are popular among the shod fairies, as are boots of all kinds, but bare foot, with ankle bells, and toe rings still carries a wide appeal for most of the fae folk.

Spider web laces, perky polka dots, and daring stripe print stockings or tights are all the rage, when paired with a flirty, sheer and floating short shirt, that flouts long lean legs. Hosiery is also quite stylish when peeking out of the bottom of a wonderful mid length, to long ruffled chiffonpetty coat. Don’t forget beaded ankle and foot jewelry, a must for summer time wear!

Gloves and half gloves are popular, and many fairies show off their taste for the fingerless variety too! As with hosiery, laces finer than spider silk, silks satin and velvets, are present. Patterns and textures range from bold bright polka dots and stripes, to sweet romantic floral motifs, and tattered and dark designs. Even the old blasé fish net pattern has it place in the spotlight. Small fishnet patterns make great finger-less gloves for the slightly naughty fairy.

Masks are favorite of fairies, and not just for formal or masquerade wear. Feathered, beaded, sculpted, and carved masks are found in the fairy realm in all shapes and forms. Full face masks, half masks, and eyes masks abound. Made from bark, wood, paper, leaves, and a myriad of other wonderful objects, each mask is unique and reflects the personal tastes of it‘s wearer. You can make you own mask using mask forms found at craft supply stores and shops. Using some glue, and the wide variety of embellishments available today, a fancy masks is easy to achieve with a free afternoon.

Face and body paint are also another popular form of adornment among many of the fairy folk. From bright colors to subtle stripes, fairies sometimes use their skins as an artistic canvas. In today’s cosmetic market there are many new products for the human brethren to achieve the magical painted look of the fairies. Attachable Austrian crystals, for skin and nails can be found in almost any retail chain type of store, that has a cosmetic section. This little bits of sparkle look great around the eyes, or chattered across a bare shoulder. Make up and body paint come in a variety of colors, from shimmering iridescent, to dark and brooding hues of the gothic scene. In many costume supply shops you can find theatrical make up for almost any purpose you can think of. Don’t forget to check out the new make up sealers, this types of shops and stores have to offer. These sealers will keep you mystical face and body paint fresh for many hours, while you dance the day away, and fly through the midnight skies.

You can even achieve that exotic pointed eared look that most fairies sport, for yourself, with a little help from a costuming shop. Ear tip prosthetics are now easier to find than ever, and with a little help from the special glue that comes with most tips, you can have a fairly real looking set of pointed ears for yourself in no time at all. While researching this article, many different ear tip brands where discovered online in a myriad of retail costuming sites, and most fell within the $8.00 to $24.00 range for two tips with glue.

If you are wanting to achieve that midnight fairy look, tiny little horns and all, look once again in the prosthetics department of costuming or theatrical shops. Horns come in all shapes and sizes, and many color variations. From horns on an elastic band, to horns that attach with spirit gum you are sure to find a pair to suite your look for a reasonable cost. Don’t forget to use you imagination either, as with our Hand Made Horns, you can create your own horns with a free afternoon, and some determination. They are quite easy to make!

Jewelry can be be made from the objects of mother nature’s bounty, and can also be more ornate than the crown jewels of any kingdom real and imagined. Twisted bits of grass, a fallen feathers, the shell of yesterday’s leaf, adore the fairies of the deep wood. Along the coast you will see shells, bits of driftwood, and sea grass adorns wrists, ankles, waists, and heads. Delicate filigree, and ropes of gold and silver, provide setting for rich jewels in the courtly settings. Jewelry with the look of heavy wrought iron, and with deep, dark, bottomless precious stones, grace smooth white necks in the night of the darker realms.

Fairy Wings

Wings come in many shapes, sizes, and colors, and are unique to each fairy. Although not every fairy sports a pair of wings, for some of the fae folk are wingless, the winged fairy look is very popular among human kind wishing to achieve a fey look! You can be industrious and make your own wings, or purchase them costume supply shops. There are also many online retail sites that specialize in giving humans their very own wings. Prices on wings range from a mild ten to twenty four dollars, to much higher priced custom made wings. You can also find very reasonable wings in different shapes that are done in plain colors like, white, black, purple, red, yellow, orange, and green. These wings can be embellished with fabric paints, appliqués, beads, and many other fabric store findings and embellishments to make them uniquely yours
